Advice and assistance with repairs and improvements for older homeowners

What is Care and Repair?

Fife Care and Repair is a free and confidential, client based service that offers advice and assistance to enable older homeowners and private tenants to improve or repair their homes. Our aim is to enable older people to live in the comfort of their own home and to remain in their own community.

How can Care and Repair assist?

Care and Repair does not employ trades people or pay for the work, but assists and advises with all other aspects of building repairs. This may include liaising with contractors, completing the necessary paperwork involved and applying to Fife Council for grant assistance on your behalf. In general the service helps to minimise the trauma associated with home improvements and repairs.

Care and Repair will also advise you of other services available or, with your permission, refer you to other organisations that could be of assistance to you.

Care and Repair also provides a Small Repairs Service whereby our qualified Small Repairs Officer can carry out minor repairs within your home to ensure that the property is wind and water-tight, safe and secure.

How can the Small Repairs Service assist?

We can assist with those little jobs that are required within your home, which are almost impossible to get a company to carry out. The service is appointment based, therefore emergency callouts will not be possible. When you call you will be advised of the first available appointment in your area, however please note that the waiting time will vary throughout the year and especially during peak times.
There is a minimal charge for our Small Repairs Officer to visit. In addition to this, if any materials are used, you will be charged for these, however no work will be carried out until you have been informed of these costs and have agreed to this.

What can we do?

Ease windows, fit window locks, repair wooden sills (at single storey level only and if rotten), replace single panes of glass, fit spy holes or safety chains, re-fix squeaky floorboards, ease taps, re-washer taps, unblock baths and sinks, replace ball valves, bleed radiators, repair leaks or clean rhones/down pipes (at single storey level only). Please remember that this list is not exhaustive so please contact us and we will let you know what works we can carry out.

What can't we do?

Painting and decorating, electrical work, gardening, repairs/servicing of central heating boilers, external works, outhouse garage repairs, home improvements, disability adaptations, major works such as replacement kitchens/bathrooms.

Should we be unable to help, we will try our best to refer you to other organisations. Please be aware however that we are unable to recommend contractors to carry out works to your home.
Home owners over the age of 60 and any home owner over the age of 50 who is registered disabled and in receipt of certain benefits can apply. Some private rented tenants, who have a lease agreement in place and have a responsibility for repairs, may also be eligible to use the service.
